Confirmation (8-9)

Our Confirmation Program is Transforming!

We are currently working on adapting our confirmation program from a three year program into a two year program with a greater focus on building a faith community among the small groups. Confirmation is preparation for young people to publicly affirm the promises made at their baptism. This new program model begins in 8th grade and is completed in 9th grade. Confirmation is based on a small group model with single gender groups lead by an adult guide. Focus is on connecting, learning, and service.

8th Grade Mentors

During Lent we ask the student and mentor to meet for Faith conversations, and to begin building a mentoring relationship. It is our hope, that this Faith Mentor will also serve as the Confirmands’ Prayer Partner in 9th grade. Mentors and students will need to meet for three sessions (each session should be approximately 1/2 hour). We will provide the Mentors with a short devotional to help guide this time together. A Faith Mentor could be a family friend, neighbor, or an Aunt or Uncle. It should be someone your student is comfortable with and you entrust with your child. Please do not ask a parent of a fellow Confirmand or your own parent to be your mentor.

9th Grade

In order to help students navigate the transition into high school, 9th Grade follows a different structure than 7/8 Grade. 9 Grade Confirmands will meet with their small groups once a month (check out the calendar for specific dates) from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and are required to attend four High School Ministries (HSM) Youth Group events between September 25, 2019 and April 29, 2020. HSM Youth Group events are held on Wednesday nights from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Youth Room. Additionally 9 Grade Confirmands are required to attend the “I Believe” retreat on January 24-25, 2020 at Camp Wapo. The purpose of the retreat is to help prepare Confirmands to create their Faith Projects.

All requirements for 9 Grade Confirmands must be turned in by April 30, 2020 in order to be confirmed on Sunday, May 3, 2020. Please remember that your Faith Project is due in the Incarnation Office one week BEFORE your interview and you should check-in to the Incarnation Office the day of your interview. We need to verify the spelling and pronunciation of your given name and give you your Confirmation robe.

Wednesday Evening Optional Dinner

An optional dinner is provided from 5 – 6:00 p.m. for students or families that choose to participate. The cost for the dinner is $110 per person for the year, or $400 for a family for the year. (The family fee can be paid by semester, $200 in September and $200 in January if families choose). Dinners are offered every Wednesday that IGNITE 5/6 is in session. For more information on dinner or to sign up to participate please contact Julie Durbin.

Adult Service Opportunities

Adult and college leaders are the backbone of youth ministry. In order to be responsible for the safety of kids and for the protection of adult volunteers, in 2004 the Incarnation Council implemented the Policy for Protecting Children and Youth. For many volunteer positions in Middle School Ministry, including being a guide, substitute guide, or driver. Adult volunteers need to submit a completed background check form at least one week prior to volunteering. Background checks are valid for 3 years.
