September 9: Blessing of the Backpacks & The Great Incarnation Fall Get Together

Sunday, September 9 will be a big day at Incarnation as we launch the start a new season of connecting, growing, and serving. All are welcome!

The Blessing of the Backpacks

Sunday, September 9 during all worship services: 8:45 a.m. & 10:05 a.m. in the Sanctuary, 10:45 a.m. & 6:00 p.m. in Incarnation Hall

The start of a new school year is an important milestone in the lives of students, parents, and all who work to support learning. Children, youth, and students of all ages are invited to bring their backpacks and book bags to worship as together we will extend a special blessing to kick off a new school year. During morning worship services, Pastor Joel Vander Wal will also have a special children’s message during worship.

This year’s theme, “Be the Light” comes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:13-16), where Jesus encourages his followers to be agents of change in the world around them. Join us as we seek to be agents of change in our places of work, neighborhoods, schools, or communities each day in the month of September shining the light of Christ wherever we are. As is tradition, children will receive as special gift to hang on their backpacks of a reminder to “Be the Light” as they move through their school days and beyond.

Blessing of the Backpacks List of Schools K-12

During all worship services on September 9, a slide show of schools will be shown in support of students and educators. Click here and please check this list of schools to make sure your child’s school is included in the slide show. Please note that some schools have been removed from the slide show from previous years. To add a school, email Erin Thorstad the name, location, and a photo of your school at by Wednesday, September 5.

Lots of volunteers are needed in a variety of roles to make this community event happen. Check out the volunteer options or sign up through Sign-Up Genius.

Food & Fun

There will be special food, including hot dogs, mini-donuts, fruit-on-a-stick, and cotton candy. The coffee and lemonade usually served after worship will be outside so everyone can be part of the fun. There will also be games and inflatables for people of all ages to enjoy together.

Service Projects

New this year at the Great Incarnation Fall Get Together are a couple of opportunities to live out Incarnation’s mission statement “Filled by God’s grace, we feed the hungry in heart, body, mind, and spirit” by participating in a service project. The two options are making Baptism Blankets and assembling Blessing Bags. You are invited to participate in either or both. Baptism Blankets are given to every child who is baptized at Incarnation, a tie blanket that represents the community of Incarnation praying for this child. Blessing Bags are Ziploc bags filled with items like water, Gatorade, granola bars, apple sauce, socks, beef jerky, etc., easily kept in one’s vehicle, so that when you come across a person in need, you can “Be the Light” and meet that need immediately.
